Beautiful scented leaf pelargoniums species in a variety of leaf forms, fragrances, flower colours and plant sizes.
Pelargonium capitatum was one of the scented geraniums that were greatly admired by the Victorians who included them in bouquets, potpourri, flavouring deserts and also in jellies & cakes. It has delicate soft rose-scented ovate crinkled leaves which soften the skin when applied to the hands and is great for hardened skin and scratches. The flowers are purple-pink with darker markings, arranged in an inflorescence of about 10-20 flowers which attract honey bees. It originates from South Africa in sandy areas where it grows to a low shrub about 100 cm in height, ideal for pots, planted in the garden or a meadow habitat.

Pelargonium asperum
A Beautiful pelargonium with rose scented deeply incised triangular leaves and pale pink flowers with darker markings, arranged in an inflorescence of about 4-5 flowers. Its foliage is used in the production of essential oil for aromatherapy & perfume and is a cultivar believed to be a cross between P. capitatum & radens. P. asperum is an upright shrub that grows to about 1 m/40 inches in height and prefers slightly sandy/moist soil conditions in part shade, ideal for medium-sized pots, in a scented garden or planted close to the house.

A delightful pelargonium with attractive triangular oak-leaf balsam scented leaves which are rough in texture and can be added to potpourri and sachets, inside freshly washed clothing to deter insects. The flowers are light to dark pink with dark purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 2-6 flowers. P. quercifolium is a tall upright branching shrub which grows to about 150 cm/59 inches in height and can grow in various soil types. The name “quercifolium” is derived from the Latin word “ quercus”meaning oak tree and the leaves are used for essential oil and for herbal remedies. It is ideal for fragrant gardens, rock gardens, large pots and containers.

Pineapple scented pelargonium
An attractive graceful pelargonium with a slightly exotic appearance, it has creamy white flowers with thin purple lines on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 1-5 flowers. The light green rounded leaves are crinkled with scalloped margins and are pineapple scented with a dark zone in the centre, an essential oil can be extracted from the leaves. P. mollicomum is a low-growing shrub which reaches about 50 cm/20 inches in height and prefers slightly sandy soil conditions. The name “mollicomum” is derived from the Latin word meaning soft hairs and is ideal for fragrant gardens, window boxes, hanging baskets or pots.

A beautiful pelargonium similar to P. graveolens but with long spreading branches and pale pink flowers, believed to be a cross between P. graveolens x P. radens which is used for its rose oil in perfume, soap and also toothpaste. The flowers are a delicate shade of pink with thin purple lines on the upper petals arranged in clusters of about 1-7 flowers on long flowering stems. P. Graveolens L’ Her is an upright shrub with a spreading growth often trailing along the ground and up walls to reach towards the light and prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in semi-shade. This plant is ideal for fragrant gardens, rock gardens, or pots. As this pelargonium is a cross between two species, one or two plants from seed may differ slightly.

Gooseberry leaved pelargonium
A pelargonium with a rather different character to other scented varieties, the light green kidney shapes leaves have a very strong fruity scent and are similar to that of a gooseberry leaf which can be added to potpourri, sachets or scented pillows. Its flowers are small, bright reddish-purple with darker markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-5 flowers. P. grossularioides is a low-spreading plant with long reddish stems and grows to about 30 cm/11 inches in length. The name “grossularioides” is derived from the Latin word meaning gooseberry. This plant prefers slightly sandy soil conditions and is ideal for fragrant gardens, window boxes, hanging baskets or pots.

P. odoratissum is a low-growing shrublet with short stems and grows to about 50 cm/20 inches in height, the name “odoratissmum” is derived from the Latin word meaning sweet-scented. Essential oil from this plant is commonly used in aromatherapy, skincare and as a natural preservative, fresh leaves can also be added to food & beverages. It prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in full sun to part shade and is ideal for fragrant gardens, window boxes, hanging baskets or pots.

Pelargonium vitifolium
One of the most reliable and hardy pelargonium species in cultivation with lemony pungent scented heart-shaped coarsely toothed leaves, which can be used for essential oil and has a citronella-like aroma. The flowers are white, pink or pale purple with darker markings on the upper petals and each flowering stalk has about 10 flowers. P. vitifolium is a large upright slightly woody shrub which grows to about 100 cm/39 inches in height and when grown in a Mediterranean-type climate this shrub can grow over quite a large area of the garden if not pruned and can survive for short periods of frost or snow when fully grown, although a plant fleece is advised. This plant is ideal for large pots, large gardens, fragrant gardens and gardens with water features.

Pelargonium glutinosum
A tall shrub which bears beautiful pastel pink flowers & darker purple markings on the upper petals in clusters of about 1-8 flowers. The leaves are balsam-scented, palmately 3-lobed and triangular. P. glutinosum is an upright branching slightly woody shrub which grows to about 100 cm/39 in in height and prefers slightly moist soil conditions. It is native to the moist or mountainous areas of the Eastern & Western Cape and is ideal for large pots & containers, herb/fragrant gardens and gardens with water features. The botanical name “glutinosum” originates from the Latin word gluten meaning glue referring to the sticky leaves of this plant.

An attractive pelargonium with beautiful butterfly-like flowers, the upper petals which turn backwards are considerably larger than the lower and are purplish pink with dark purple markings, each flowering stalk has about 5-10 flowers. The leaves are heart-shaped, shallowly lobed and have a pungent musky scent. P. papilionaeum is an upright branching shrub which grows to about 2 metres/6 ½ ft in height and prefers sandy loam soil conditions in part shade. It is native to the Eastern & Western Cape where it grows on mountainsides and at the edge of forests, usually in shady areas near streams.
Best grown in large pots or planted in the garden and also combined with other plants to add colour.

Fresh leaves can be used in food & beverages and are traditionally added to a chocolate cake by placing the leaves at the base of a baking tin before adding the mix. An old classic pelargonium also known as the old-fashioned rose geranium has pink to light purple flowers & darker markings on the upper petals, each flowering stalk has about 5-10 flowers. The soft velvety triangular deeply incised leaves have a rosy mint scent and have been well known since the 17th century for their use in food & beverages, tea, potpourri & perfume, it is also used in the production of rose geranium essential oil. P graveolens is an upright branching slightly woody shrub that reaches about 150 cm/29 inches & is ideal for pots or fragrant gardens.

A beautiful pelargonium with a natural charm, the leaves have a slight camphor scent and resemble that of a birch leaf which is ovate and toothed, when crushed the aroma is released and is used for essential oil, ointment and steam inhalation for coughs & chest complaints. The flowers are pink or purple with purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-4 flowers. P. betulinum is an upright slightly woody shrublet which grows to about 130 cm/51 inches in height and prefers well-drained slightly sandy soil conditions in full sun to part shade. A superb variety with aromatic feathery deeply divided greyish-green leaves and small white flowers with darker markings, each flowering stalk contains about 1-5 flowers. The name “ Abrotanifolium” is derived from the Latin meaning Southernwood which refers to its likeness to the leaves and scent of Artemisia abrotanum, a shrub from the sunflower family. Pelargonium abrotanifolium is a low-growing branching slightly woody shrub that reaches about 50 cm (20 inches) in height and is native to a large area of the Western Cape in dry regions. It prefers well-drained sandy soil in full sun and is best planted with other shrubs in the garden or grown in medium-sized pots on a table or plant stand.
