Beautiful scented leaf pelargoniums species in a variety of leaf forms, fragrances, flower colours and plant sizes.




Pelargonium capitatum

The scented leaf pelargonium P. captatum was greatly admired by the Victorians who included them in bouquets, pot pourri, flavouring deserts and also in jellies & cakes.  

P. capitatum has delicate rose scented ovate crinkled leaves with a soft texture and a sweet fragrance is released when bruised. Flowers are arranged in an inflorescence of about 10-20 flowers and are mauve pink in colour. Essential oils can be extracted from its leaves by steam distillation. It originates from South Africa in sandy areas & grows to a low shrub about 100 cm in height, ideal for pots or planted in the garden.

Pelargonium  asperum

A Beautiful rose scented geranium believed to be a cross between P. capitatum & P. radens, the leaves are used for essential oil, aromatherapy & perfume.

It is an upright plant that grows to about 1 m/40 inches in height with rose scented deeply incised triangular leaves and pale pink flowers with darker markings on the upper petals with each flower stalk contains 4-5 flowers.

This plant prefers slightly sandy/moist soil conditions in part shade and is ideal for a medium sized pot, scented garden or planted close to the house.

Pelargonium  grossularioides

Gooseberry leaved pelargonium

A  pelargonium with a rather different character to other scented varieties as the light green kidney shapes leaves have a very strong fruity scent which are similar in appearance to a gooseberry leaf.

Although small, the flowers are brightly coloured reddish purple with darker markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-5 flowers.

P. grossulariodes  is a low spreading plant with long reddish stems which grows to about 30 cm/11 inches in length and prefers slightly sandy soil conditions.

The name “grossulariodes” is derived from the Latin word meaning gooseberry. It is ideal for fragrant gardens, window boxes, hanging baskets or pots.

Pelargonium  odoratissimum

An impressive variety with beautiful light green soft velvety apple scented leaves which are  heart shaped, it has pale pink to white flowers with purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-8 flowers.

P. odoratissimum is a low growing shrub-let with short stems and grows to about  50 cm/20 inches in height, it prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in full sun to part shade.

The name “odoratissimum” is derived from the Latin word meaning sweet scented and essential oil from this plant is commonly used in aromatherapy and skin care,

Pelargonium  quercifolium  

 A delightful pelargonium that has particularly attractive oak leaf shaped balsam scented leaves, the flowers are light to dark pink with dark purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 2-6 flowers.

P. quercifolium is a tall upright branching shrub which grows to about 150 cm/59 inches in height and can grow in a range of different soil conditions.

The name “quercifolium” is derived from the Latin word “ quercus”meaning oak tree and the leaves are used for essential oil and for herbal remedies.

It is ideal for fragrant gardens, rock gardens, large pots and containers.

A particularly charming pelargonium with delicate rose/lemon scented grey green finely divided triangular leaves, The flowers are light purple to pink  with purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-6 flowers.  

P. radens is tall upright shrub which grows to about 100 cm/40 in height and prefers moist soil conditions preferably underneath or next to taller plants.

It is ideal for medium to large pots, grown in the garden with various plants to add colour, fragrant gardens, rock gardens, next to succulents or gardens beside water features.

Butterfly pelargonium

An attractive pelargonium with beautiful purplish pink flowers that resembles a butterfly with dark purple markings on the upper petals, which are considerably larger than the lower petals & each flowering stalk has about 5-10 flowers, the leaves are heart shaped 4-5 shallow lobed and are scented.

P. papilionaeum  is an upright branching  shrub which grows to about 2 metres/6 ½ ft  in height and prefers sandy loam soil conditions in part shade.

It is native to the Eastern & Western Cape where it grows on mountainsides and at the edge of forests, usually in shady areas near to streams.

 Best grown in large pots or planted in the garden and also combined with other plants to add colour.

Pelargonium  betulinum

Birch leaved pelargonium

A beautiful pelargonium with a natural charm, the leaves are slightly camphor scented and resemble that of a birch leaf which are ovate & toothed. The flowers are pink or purple with purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-4 flowers.

P. betulinum is an upright slightly woody shrub-let which grows to about 130 cm/51 inches in height and prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in full sun to part shade. Best planted in the garden in a sheltered place or grown in larger pots. The steam distillation of the leaves are often used in medicine to treat throat & chest complaints.

 This is a pelargonium of exceptional delicacy & charm, it has pinkish purple flowers with red or pink markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 3-6  flowers. The dark green sticky triangular finely divided leaves are balsam scented.

It is a low growing shrub which reaches to about 150 cm/59 inches in height and prefers moist soil conditions, also in slightly damp areas.

The name “denticulatum” is derived from the Latin word meaning small teeth referring to the sharp pointed teeth along the edge of the leaves. It is ideal for larger pots, planted in the garden, fragrant gardens or near water features.

This is a pelargonium that was well known since the 17th century for its use in food & beverages, tea, pot pourri & perfume, it is also very popular in Bulgaria where it is used in the production of rose geranium essential oil.

P graveolens is an upright branching slightly woody shrub that reaches about 150 cm/29 inches & is ideal for pots, tubs or fragrant gardens.

A rare and graceful shrub with aromatic three lobed shallow leaves that resembles a palm of a hand in shape and white to pink flowers with dark red markings on the upper petals.

This plant was given the name “Greytonese” because it was first discovered in the small town of Greyton in the Western Cape, South Africa & was originally named after the governor of the cape Sir George Grey.

Pelargonium greytonense is an upright slightly woody shrub-let covered with long & short hairs and grows to about 100 cm (39 inches).

Best planted in the garden along side other plants or shrubs, in medium sized pots or in a fragrant garden.

Pelargonium  graveolens L’Her

Rose geranium

A beautiful pelargonium  which is  believed to be a cross between graveolens x radens and is often used for rose oil in perfume, soap and also toothpaste.

It has pale pink  flowers with thin purple lines on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 1-7 flowers.  P. Graveolens L’ Her is an up right  shrub with a spreading growth often trailing along the ground and up walls to reach towards the light  and prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in semi shade.

This plant is ideal for fragrant gardens, rock gardens,or pots.

As this pelargonium is a cross between two species, it is possible that one or two plants from seed may become  P. gravelens or P. radens.

A pelargonium with exquisite charm, The flowers although quite small can resemble a small figure which are light to dark pink in colour with purple markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 6-12 flowers.

It also has lovely maple shaped balsam scented leaves which are covered in short hairs.

Pelargonium  vitifolium

One of the most reliable and hardy pelargoniums which has heart shaped coarsely toothed leaves with a lemony scent.  The flowers are white, pink or pale purple with darker markings on the upper petals and each flowering stalk has about 10 flowers.

P. vitifolium is a large upright slightly woody shrub which grows to about 100 cm/39 inches in height & when grown in a Mediterranean type climate this shrub can grow quite large and may take over quite a wide area if not pruned, it can also survive for short periods of frost or snow when fully grown.

This charming pelargonium bears soft velvety five lobed peppermint scented leaves and small flowers with purple markings on the upper petals. The leaves can be used as a herb in cooking and is traditionally added to a chocolate cake by placing the leaves at the base of a baking tin before adding the mix.
