Pelargonium aridum
An elegant pelargonium with delicate finely divided green to brownish green leaves and pale yellow flowers arranged in an inflorescence of up to five flowers. Pelargonium aridum is a low-growing semi-succulent tufted plant that grows to about 30 cm/12 inches in height and has a large underground tuberous root, it is also deciduous in Winter. This plant prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in part shade and is ideal for medium-sized pots preferably on the window sill or grown underneath larger plants in the garden.

Pelargonium australe
An elegant shrublet with long flowering stems and tight clusters of up to twelve white to light pink flowers with darker markings. This plant is native to Australia in areas of New South Wales & Victoria where it is known as the native storks bill and Austral storks bill. It is a low-growing upright spreading plant that grows to about 30 cm /12 inches in height and has ovate leaves with shallow lobes. This plant prefers slightly sandy soil conditions in full sun to part shade and grows well in medium-large sized pots, grown in the garden or a rock garden.

Pelargonium cucullatum
A tough pelargonium with large slightly scented pinkish-purple flowers with dark purple markings which attract bees, moths, birds and butterflies. The rounded toothed leaves tilt upwards forming a cup shape and are scented on some plants which release a pleasant sweet fragrance when crushed. P. cucullatum is a tall upright branching slightly woody plant that grows to 200 cm (78 inches) in height, It originates from South Africa in the Western Cape where it grows in sandy coastal areas. Best planted in the garden in a sheltered place or in grown in a larger pot.

Pelargonium elongatum
A delightful low-growing pelargonium with kidney-shaped leaves which have a dark brown horseshoe zone in the centre and are shallow-lobed on long thin petioles. The flowers are cream with narrow petals and red veins, but occasionally have a touch of pink on the petals. P. elongatum is a small straggling ground-covering plant which prefers to grow under or next to taller plants in the garden. Best planted in medium-sized pots or larger pots mixed with other plants, window boxes or planted in the garden.

One of the most colourful of the pelargonium species with delicate salmon pink coloured flowers and darker veins on the upper petals, the leaves are semi-succulent, thick and fold upwards. P. peltatum is an upright branching slightly succulent shrub that grows to about 150 cm/59 inches in height and prefers full sun to part shade. An interesting variety that was once a popular garden plant during the 1870s, it has palmate shallow-lobed aromatic leaves with dark veins. The flowers are white or pale pink with reddish-pink markings on the upper petals & each flowering stalk has about 5 flowers. P. visscossimum is an upright branching shrub with a sticky texture on the leaves that can stick to your fingers, the name “visscossimum” is derived from the Latin word ‘visco’ meaning having a glue or make sticky. Pelargonium vitifolium
One of the most reliable and hardy pelargonium species in cultivation with lemony pungent scented heart-shaped coarsely toothed leaves, which can be used for essential oil and has a citronella-like aroma. The flowers are white, pink or pale purple with darker markings on the upper petals and each flowering stalk has about 10 flowers. P. vitifolium is a large upright slightly woody shrub which grows to about 100 cm/39 inches in height and when grown in a Mediterranean-type climate this shrub can grow over quite a large area of the garden if not pruned and can survive for short periods of frost or snow when fully grown, although a plant fleece is advised. Pelargonium capitatum was one of the scented geraniums that were greatly admired by the Victorians who included them in bouquets, potpourri, flavouring deserts and also in jellies & cakes. It has delicate soft rose-scented ovate crinkled leaves which soften the skin when applied to the hands and is great for hardened skin and scratches. The flowers are purple-pink with darker markings, arranged in an inflorescence of about 10-20 flowers which attract honey bees. It originates from South Africa in sandy areas where it grows to a low shrub about 100 cm in height, ideal for pots, planted in the garden or a meadow habitat.
